Roy Hargrove

Whether Roy Hargrove is funking up your apartment with smooth neo-soul or jamming vintage hard bop, the 36-year-old trumpeter and flugelhorn maestro has kept audiences on their heels throughout his heralded career. Discovered by Wynton Marsalis as a teenager, Hargrove has played alongside his idols (Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock) as well as contemporary soul music's VIPs (D'Angelo, Erykah Badu). His game is so versatile that Verve Records nurtured two entirely different Hargrove projects in 2006: the RH Factor's Distractions and the Roy Hargrove Quintet's Nothing's Serious. Both albums feature ridiculously talented players who favor soul, funk and R&B-inspired hooks over avant-garde experimentation. Hargrove's quintet performs Saturday at 8 at the Folly Theater. Get tickets at the box office or from Ticketmaster for $15 to $50.
