Heads of rap labels are apt to use "family" as a euphemism for their crew of artists, homeboys and hype men. Kocane Cowboy 2.2, the newest release from rapper Rushin Roolet, finds local legend Rich the Factor truly keeping the music in the family. The Hanson brothers they're not, but the partnership between Rush (Rich's cousin) and Rich (owner, Major Factor Records) is a productive one. Rush provides the verses that blend Bay Area hyphy with Kansas City gangster; in turn, Major Factor provides capital, promotion and solid production. Kocane 2.2 is an unapologetic homage to the street life for those who live it. With titles like "Grit About It" and "Fucc Bouts," the veteran rapper evokes E-40's affinity for lexical innovation. The album also doubles as a guide to living profitably in the recession. Over the lightly bouncing beats of "Keep a Trick Broke," Rush explains how to turn an ordinary bitch into an ATM. This Pavlovian strategy, which leverages absolute desperation against absolute obedience, could have legs, as they say in business. At any rate, layoff victims should take it from Rush: A strong pimp hand could be a useful tool in your job search.
