In 1965, native Louisianan Ruth Fertel bought a tiny New Orleans restaurant called Chris Steak House. After a fire destroyed the place, Ruth relocated and added her name to the original. A loyal patron later convinced Ruth to franchise, and the rest, as they say, is restaurant-chain history. The Kansas City location opened on the Country Club Plaza in 1997, and while breaking ground in a steak-famous town like KC brought stiff competition, Ruths has more than held its own. Sophisticated without being stuffy, the spacious Ruths Chris is awash in elegant mahogany woodwork. Sumptuous Southern fare can be had family style, so sharing portions of shrimp remoulade, blue crab cakes, juicy lamb chops with mint, and those sizzlin steaks is easy.
