Sarah McLachlan

Saturday, April 30, at Kemper Arena.

Perhaps the old adage is true: If women ran the world, there would be no more war. If you follow this logic a little further, Sarah McLachlan would be the top candidate for omnipotent ruler of the universe. Forget Britney and the countless others campaigning on the pop-princess ticket -- McLachlan walks the walk with a breathy, literate folk that has captured American hearts and minds time and time again. When she's not recording platinum breakthroughs such as 1993's fluttering "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" or 1997's ethereal "Surfacing," she's busy fighting for causes that actually mean something -- battling child prostitution in Cambodia and poverty in Thailand and working for the unification of female artists at Lilith Fair. She may not make headlines and magazine covers every time she steps out her front door, but we prefer a woman who's not afraid to inspire beauty and provoke thought at the same time. You've got our vote, Sarah.
