A small community in Africa continues to reap the benefits of its connection to Kansas. Comfort the Children, a Lawrence-based charitable organization, strengthens that relationship with its first local fundraiser, "Kansas to Kenya: Start the Connection," from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Milton's (950 Massachusetts in Lawrence). Founded in 2003 by University of Kansas alumnus Zane Wilemon, Comfort the Children focuses its efforts on Maai Mahiu, Kenya, by helping the community become sustainable in the areas of education, health care, environment, economy and community development. In the past year, CTC has built classrooms and a day-care center for developmentally disabled children, provided medical care to more than 750 patients, and developed nutritional menus for orphanages, says volunteer Allison Edwards. These accomplishments and current projects will be highlighted at the informal event. A donation of $25 is suggested. For more information, see ctcinternational.org or e-mail Edwards at allison.m.edwards@gmail.com.
