Welcome to Sidekick's, where gay meets cowboy. The pinnacle of all specialty bars, this gay country-western joint opened its doors 15 years ago. The venue of choice for effeminate steer wrestlers (they really do exist!) it's also a popular spot for open-minded folks looking to line dance, listen to country music or shoot a game of pool. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, with different events taking place weekly -- amateur boxer-short contests, drag shows, charity fund raisers. This place is not for the faint of heart or the easily offended -- one can expect shirtless bartenders, ass-baring chaps and people just not giving a damn. It's that kind of scene.

I just came back from a weekend of fun in Kansas City and wanted to take my friends to Sidekicks because I use to live there and always have had a good time when visiting this bar. This experience was not the same as my previous visits. I had to listen to the DJ act like a child and argue with a customer about song selection. It was very apparent that the DJ didn't want to play the customers song selection but his own selections were NOT a hit with the crowd, no one was dancing with his selections. I feel that when its late in the evening if a customer is requesting a song, play it. If they are going to dance then great - isn't sidekicks a dance bar? I don't think I will make it a point to visit Sidekicks the next time I am in town and honestly think the owners should reevaluate their DJ and his attitude towards the customers.
