Hatha yoga can be practiced using the downward-facing-dog position and breath control. Bhakti yoga is the yoga of devotion and is practiced using kirtan, a chanted devotional mantra that encourages what its practitioners call a "consciousness transformation." Bringing the ecstasy to KC is Dave Stringer
, a world-renowned master of kirtan. From 8 to 10 tonight, Kansas Siddhi Yoga West (1717 Wyandotte) is the setting as Stringer and his band perform contemporary East Indian kirtan to promote his latest release, Divas and Devas
. Sung in Marathi, Hindi and Sanskrit in call-and-response fashion, the sounds are supposed to emancipate the heart and soothe the mind. To make this musical bliss even more approachable, the mantra responses are led by a female singer and projected onto a screen. "What's great about Dave is that he makes what might sound overly spiritual totally accessible. He's a very regular guy who loves music and the effect it has on our hearts and spirits," says Gina Caputo, director of Kansas Siddhi Yoga. Feel the flowing sense of unity for $20.
