The winner of tonight's
KC Crown Showdown will have to withstand the scrutiny of a panel of judges, as well as the audience itself. Taking a cue from the Apollo Theater, the crowd decides who's talented enough to finish their set."It's gonna be audience participation — the audience can boo or cheer a performer, but we also have judges to decide who wins," says event organizer Michael Wilson. "It's like a family-related show. Dancers, singers, rappers. We wanted to bring something to KC with crowd participation, but that would also be OK for my grandma to go to." And before the winner walks away with the $500 Grand Prize, R&B singer Bobby Valentino will perform. The show starts at 7 p.m. at the Folly Theater (300 West 12th Street, 816-842-5500). Tickets cost $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
