Storm the Stage

The Brick (1727 McGee) is well-known as a KC hipster haven filled to the gills with beer-soaked rock-and-roll memories — not really an encouraging environment for nervous, first-time entertainers sharing their virgin wares. Owner Sheri Parr was hoping to change all that when she unveiled the club’s first open-mic night a few weeks ago.

With former Jilly’s Open Forum MC Mike Medeiros as host, the showcase carries a $3 cover and runs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesday nights. Medeiros, the man behind another amateur-night gig on Thursdays at The Point, assures audiences with more discerning tastes that this isn’t some hackneyed anything-goes happening.

“I try to avoid the word open-mic because that implies a free-for-all,” he says. “I give a quality show.”

Those wishing to perform can’t do it on a lark; all names must be submitted to Medeiros before 7 p.m. the day of the event. And though the night primarily features comedic antics, he welcomes all types of acts. “It’s great that the Brick is known as a music venue so it’ll supply that talent,” he says. “But we also welcome poets, actors, magicians, jugglers ... as long as they don’t juggle fire.” Parr also offers wicked-cheap tacos and two-buck bottles of Miller High Life (and High Life Lite).
