Strange Music

Set your phasers to funk and aim for the heart of Sun Ra. This evening is the perfect point in the space-time continuum for Black Crack Revue's Ultra-Flesh Dance at Californos (4124 Pennsylvania). BCR is Kansas City's longest-running self-described "afro, nuclear, wavabilly, funk, swing, reggae, turska band." (How many are there?). Longtime members Allaudin Ottinger (drums and voice), Thomas Aber (reeds) and founder Dwight Frizzell (reeds) will be there in the flesh alongside localized Milky Way bandmates Julia Thro (guitar), Pat Conway (percussion and reeds) and Mark Thies (bass). Kat "Theremin" Dison is also onboard the BCR mothership to add some electric flux to the intergalactic mix of Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, Erik Satie and original music, including the for-some-reason "unsung country sensation 'Righty' Frizzell." The time-traveling, terrestrial holiday grooves start at 8:30 p.m. and vibrate till midnight. Admission is $6 at the door. — Robert Folsom
