The island-themed Sunset Grill seems out of place in the middle of suburban Overland Park. But the chill atmosphere at this six-year-old establishment is pleasantly welcoming, and the lack of intentional irony and kitsch is refreshing. The bar is mostly separate from the dining area, and the high-top tables are hand-painted with tropical motifs including hula girls and palm trees. Tiled mosaics in the shapes of orchids and salamanders adorn the walls, and the bathroom walls are painted with inspirational quotes. Daily drink specials are available, and the weekends feature live entertainment, including local rock bands, magicians and Elvis impersonators.

Restaurant Details

The idea of a tropics-inspired beach shack in the middle of a suburban blacktop parking lot may sound ridiculous, but the Sunset Grill is so eccentric, you can’t help but like it. Hands-on owners Rod Lampe and Dan Tierney often make sure there’s live music playing in the lounge and that the bartenders can whip up all kinds of exotic, fruity cocktails. The menu leans heavily in the direction of the South Seas, though not all of the dishes are culinary pearls. The fare that sounds like vacation food is best: burgers, shrimp tacos, salads, a respectable Key lime pie. It’s a family-friendly, nonsmoking concept aimed firmly at baby-boomer diners who remember the venue’s name comes from a Don Henley song. — Charles Ferruzza

I had the pleasure of eating breakfast last Sunday at the Sunset. I don't go out for breakfast very much so it was an exceptionally great experience. The waitress was so pleasant and not matter how many changes we made to the order she kept her smile and made sure it was right. The food was yummy, the atmosphere great and one of the owners, Rod, made sure I connected with some very good friends that were also dining there. Thanks for a great experience, Terri
