Swing Setting

Prohibition couldn't stop it. The Depression only made it mad. Not even late-'90s MTV and Top 40 radio exposure could kill it. Open marriages commandeering its name have only made it stronger. It's swing! It's dancing! And it lives!Jump, jive and celebrate the unsinkable swing dance tonight in the Kansas room of the Kansas Union (1301 Jayhawk Boulevard on the KU campus in Lawrence). Hosted by the KU Swing Society, the free dance is open to the public and helps beginners "collar the jive" with dance lessons from 8 to 8:45 p.m., followed by social dancing until 11. Cats and kittens can make the scene solo — sans zoot suits or special ground grippers — because KUSS provides partners and doesn't impose a footwear rule. (The group's advice: Wear shoes that will stay on while "draggin' a hoof.") For more information, e-mail kuswingsociety@yahoo.com.
