Symphonic Success Speech

Internationally renowned composer Jonathan Leshnoff kicks off the Jewish Community Center's new lecture series — "Success: the 614th Commandment?" — at 7 p.m. in the center's White Theatre (5801 West 115th Street in Overland Park). The series aims to highlight individuals who excel in secular fields while retaining their Jewish identities. Leshnoff will discuss his career with the world's top orchestras and musicians, as well as his Jewish faith and its influence on his life and work. The event is free, but registration is required (call 913-327-4647). Leshnoff's newest composition, Starburst, co-commissioned by the Kansas City and Baltimore symphonies, opens the Kansas City Symphony's season October 8, alongside Stravinsky's Firebird and guest violinist Hilary Hahn playing Sibelius' Violin Concerto. For more information, call 816-471-0400 or see kcsymphony.org.— Grace Suh
