Since 39th Streets Restaurant Row already has a Chinese buffet and a Chinese-style dumpling restaurant, the addition of a traditional Oriental restaurant seems superfluous. But the family-owned Szechuan House is a different story. Its a time warp Chinese dining experience, from the paper lanterns at the entrance to an amusingly retro menu, featuring modestly priced family dinners a group of eight can dine lavishly for about 13 bucks each and Chef Special Dinners that add, for a small upcharge, appetizers and soup, to an entrée. The menu doesnt miss a beat in the Szechuan repertoire: Mu Shu, hot braised pork, Kung Pao beef, Hunan chicken, and Sa Cha Shrimp. The portions are generous but the service can be irritatingly lackadaisical. — Charles Ferruzza

Do you remember when Chinese Food used to taste REALLY good? And your dishes had fresh vegetables and discernably different sauces other than "brown" or "white"? Well....We've got a winner in Szechuan House! Szechuan ouse is old-school chinese food, with all the bases covered -- a few musts...the scallion pancakes on the are dense and chewy, the shrimp and peapods have lots of fresh veggies and a classic light chinese sauce, the pepper beef is savory and perfect. AND, your fried rice will be made the right way, with just bean sprouts and onions -- no frozen mixed peas, carrot, corn blend here.
Another bonus...they deliver on $30 or more.
Give it a try and take a trip to Chinese before the buffet.
