When Lawrences venerable Eldridge Hotel a splendid lodging house with a unique history that parallels the fortunes of this college town had its most recent renovation, the ground-floor dining room was transformed into a pretty, slightly formal restaurant called Ten (named for the number on the basketball jersey worn by 1968 All-American KU football star Bobby Douglass). Its now the fanciest place to eat in the city. The menu which is also used in the more casual tile-floored saloon called the Jayhawker across the hall has an interesting array of luncheon and dinner items ranging from sandwiches, soups and salads to seafood crusted with various ingredients, along with excellent (and modestly-priced) steaks, a couple of tasty vegetarian dishes and big fattening desserts. Its one of the most appealing upscale dinner spots on the busy Massachusetts corridor, with a fine wine list. — Charles Ferruzza
