Though best known for its authentic Mexican cuisine, Teocali, in downtown’s Dutch Hill neighborhood, is a popular destination for a gaggle of different after-work drinkers, including Truman Medical Center students, UMKC dental students and neighborhood residents. The early-starting happy hour (3:30-6 p.m.), margarita specials (including more than 40 different tequilas), not-too-loud music and cozy window seating make for a comfortable, low-stress way to end to a long day.

Restaurant Details

Staying true to their Teocaltiche, Jalisco roots, Teocali owners Enrique and Chela Gutierrez have been serving up time-honored, authentic Gutierrez family recipes to happy patrons for more than four years now. And while Teocali definitely delivers on the usual beef, chicken and pork offerings, the place is known for its seafood – particularly the fish tacos. Stuffed with tender, perfectly seasoned chunks of tilapia and fresh pico de gallo, the dish is accompanied by whole pinto beans instead of the usual refried variety, earning them “Best Designer Tacos” in the 2008 Pitch Best Of Kansas City issue.
