The Kinetiks

"I'm a musician," Beck told an interviewer in 1999, "because in music ... you don't have to abide by divisions. The whole idea is anarchy — and the best music just doesn't give a fuck." The Kinetiks are not Beck (though his influence is present in their music). They do, however, seem to know exactly what he means. Badass singer and guitarist Spencer Goerz-Giffen, bassist Nate Kraft (a man whose cool rivals Pierce Brosnan's), wildman drummer Jason Kniep and keyboardist Rani Waugh blend unsullied rock and roll with electronic experimentation, agile rhythms and an aptitude for dissonance. Most refreshing are Goerz-Giffen's and Waugh's voices; the women consistently generate tight harmonies and soaring melodies. And this band can definitely put on a show — and that, of course, is because they know how not to give a fuck.
