The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Saturday, June 11, at the Ottawa Municipal Auditorium.

The CMT network just named the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band among the top 20 country bands of all time, up there with the Carter Family, Bill Monroe and Johnny Cash. The band isn't necessarily a hit maker, however. After more than 30 years, "Mr. Bojangles" and "Fishin' in the Dark" remain its most recognizable songs. But the Dirt Band has been touring and collaborating for decades, weaving its California sound into the history of country music. It ain't easy for West Coast hippies to win the heart of Nashville, and these guys did it by inviting the likes of Doc Watson and Maybelle Carter onto their recordings. A tour in support of the Dirt Band's latest album, Welcome to Woody Creek, brings it to the Franklin County Fair.
