Either Die Hard meets Elmore James or the shuffle on Ry Cooder's iPod.

What are you liking/not liking about the KC music scene right now?

KC audiences are very loyal to KC bands. If they love you, they will come back and bring friends. Our local folks really want to see musicians put their own signature on the music they're playing. I think we need to always be converting and bringing friends who've not seen live music before.

The best song/album I/we heard this year:

The reissue of Albert King's I'll Play the Blues for You on Stax. Just can't be beat.

The best show I/we saw this year:

I will admit some bias because we were a part of it, but the 100-year birthday tribute to Woody Guthrie that KKFI 90.1 put on was one of the best. The Bats and I love to play with other bands on the bill. Seems we gig so often, we can't just dig the show with a drink in our hand anymore. It was great to see such a variety of acts all playing those great songs.

What's your favorite local act at the moment?

I run into the Rev. Carl Butler and think, "Does KC know what a treasure that guy is?" Please, if you haven't yet, check out the Gospel Lounge show he does at Knuckleheads on Wednesdays.

Katy Guillen

What's new and what's next?

The Katy Guillen Trio has recorded a couple of songs that we'll be releasing online as singles, come August. We plan on completing recording for an album by early 2014.

In 140 or fewer characters, my/our sound is ...

We have a soulful rock sound. Influences include Heartless Bastards, Jimi Hendrix and Patty Griffin.

The best song/album I/we heard this year:

I dig the Grisly Hand's new record.

The best show I/we saw this year:

We enjoyed the Tedeschi Trucks Band at Grinders in June.

What's your favorite local act at the moment?

The Silver Maggies put on a nice tight show, and their new record is good, too.

Samantha Fish

What's new and what's next?

I have a new record coming out this September. It's called Black Wind Howlin'. Our release party is at the VooDoo Lounge on September 6. Other than that, we are touring a lot. There will be fewer and fewer KC shows this year, but we are definitely making them count when we get them.

In 140 or fewer characters, my/our sound is ...

Bluesy music. It's not pure blues by any means, but it has the feel. Working our way into Americana/roots, but still it has a harder edge.

What are you liking/not liking about the KC music scene right now?

There are always new acts emerging. It seems that the talent pool runs very deep. Just when you think that's all KC has to offer, someone else pops out of the woodwork.

The best show I/we saw this year:

Tedeschi Trucks Band and the Revivalists sounded killer at Crossroads a few weeks ago. I always love it when my friends come to town. Paul Thorn, Mike Zito, Tab Benoit at Knuckleheads are always favs of mine. Participating in the Tom Hall Benefit last August was pretty epic as well.
