A leading force in the Harlem Renaissance, painter and graphic artist Aaron Douglas was a 1917 Topeka High School graduate and a teacher at Lincoln High in KC in the 1920s. Today, he is the inspiration behind The Ray of Hope, a quilt and mural project created by eighth-grade students at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School in Lawrence and fourth-grade students at Williams Science and Fine Art Magnet School in Topeka. The project is on display in the lobby of the Spencer Museum of Art (1301 Mississippi, Lawrence, 785-864-4710) through September 16. For more information, see spencerart.ku.edu.
