The Stock Market Crash

Thursday, August 10 and Friday, August 11, at the Record Bar

Oklahoma's The Stock Market Crash has created its sound by corralling its favorite '80s new-wave and Britpop sounds — the Cars, Echo and the Bunnymen — while maintaining the theatricality and bravado shared by the best of the era. Looking like the love child of Alex from A Clockwork Orange and Morrissey, frontman Matthew Bacon sings with the sharpness of Damon Albarn and the long vowels of the Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler. The music's dark lyrics are tempered by the Cure-like playfulness and pop sensibility of guitar players Derek Knowlton and Collin Shots (that name deserves a rimshot) and drummer John Curtis. Go and dance alone — just don't forget your black eyeliner. <
