This neighborhood bar close to the eclectic intersection of 17th and Summit calls itself a “gathering place.” While the turn-of-the-century brick building houses the main dining room and a small bar, outside there is a beer garden with long picnic tables perfect for big parties or, when it's busy, chance encounters with strangers. The bar prides itself on its unique, seasonal cuisine made with local ingredients and its relaxed, communal feel. An especially good spot for taking out-of-town guests, this urban treasure usually entertains a fun cross-section of Kansas Citians.

Restaurant Details

This urban dining room and beer garden opened with the most potential of any restaurant in 2009. But the inconsistent food and erratic service make it one of the more difficult venues to love unconditionally. It’s beautifully designed, with shiny hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and an interesting selection of works by local artists. When the food and service are on the money, the Westside Local is intoxicatingly delightful, beginning with the starters, which include versions of saloon standards like deviled eggs drizzled with a citrus vinaigrette, a charcuterie plate, and sardines and pickles. Dinners are imaginative and quite good, particularly when there’s a strong hand in the kitchen. — Charles Ferruzza
