Once upon a time, dozens of independently owned drugstores with soda fountains dotted Kansas City and its surrounding towns. Now they’re harder to find than a 1794 silver dollar. But Leavenworth’s Corner Pharmacy still serves the kind of fountain treats – foaming ice cream sodas, phosphates, birch beer, Green River sodas – that were popular at the turn of the previous century. The prices seem to be from an earlier century, too. Breakfast is served anytime, there’s usually a daily lunch special, and the double cheeseburger alone is well worth a drive to Leavenworth. The kids who work behind the counter are as friendly as characters in a Walt Disney film, and they can make a mind-blowing chocolate malt. — Charles Ferruzza
