The long, narrow historic space at 931 Broadway has been many things since it was erected in 1911. Long known as a steakhouse, it’s now a restaurant with affordable menu selections, live jazz Monday through Saturday, and a drink menu that focuses on older-style cocktails. Formerly a speakeasy, the small downstairs jazz club is in full swing Friday and Saturday nights, often featuring the stride piano stylings of Bram Wijnands. Reservations are recommended for dinner, but there’s still plenty of room to enjoy a vanilla-ginger martini or apple-cinnamon-infused bourbon cocktail in the upstairs bar or the front lounge area.

Restaurant Details

There’s a century of colorful history in this building, which was a saloon and brothel in Kansas City’s more raucous past. Today, it’s a classic steakhouse where the price of a dinner still includes a salad; vegetables; a choice of rice, garlic mashed potatoes, a baked or twice-baked potato or fries; and a dinner roll. The dry-aged steaks are good, and chef Jim Nelson has a masterful way with fish and pork and turns out some unexpectedly creative sliders, too. The place has a lot of romantic charm and a first-rate wine list. — Charles Ferruzza
