Todd Rundgren

Wednesday, June 2, at the Beaumont Club.

Bugger the Buggles. Yes, we know "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the first video to air on MTV. But who had the second video, smart guy? Todd Rundgren. Oh, yeah, him. The underground rock star who has plied his trade for 34 years. Garage rock and glam? He's done it. He's also deftly revealed the looming chasm that constitutes "getting a woman" to ninth-grade boys around America. He cranked out power ballads like "Can We Still Be Friends" years before anyone really knew what a power ballad was. And he has out-T-Boned Burnett in the production department by crafting albums for everyone from Meatloaf to Bad Religion. With his first album of all-new material in ten years (Liars) and a crackerjack backing band (the Liars), Rundgren is decking himself out in Morris Day suits and putting the soul back in soul. Talk about reinvention. Now, where did you say those Buggles are these days?
