Tony Party

The problem with the Tony Awards — at least here in the Midwest — is that live theater is a local art. It's tough to care about Broadway plays that you haven't seen or musicals that you can't sing along to. But the award show itself is a good time, and just because Broadway theaters have the spotlight doesn't mean you can't support local theater in Kansas City. The Barn Players, a nonprofit community-theater group based in Mission, hosts a Tony Awards-watching fundraiser at the Barn Players Community Theatre (6219 Martway). The doors open at 6, so there's plenty of time to savor the light buffet, enjoy a drink and enter the raffle before the show starts on a big screen at 7. Tickets cost $15, and reservations are suggested. Call 913-432-9100 or see thebarnplayers.org for more information.— Danny Volin
