Top to Bottom

This weekend is your last chance to see Dreamgirls at Starlight Theatre (4600 Starlight Road, 816-363-7827). A story replete with drama, jealousy and falls from grace, it condenses basically the whole history of 20th-century popular music into a couple of hours. R&B aspirants Effie, Deena and Lorrell are stars on the rise after a smash appearance at the Apollo Theater's Amateur Night, and their ensuing journey includes encounters with big stars on the wane, intramural conflicts, and the appropriation of their hit single by a white cover band. The serious number of Tony Awards and nominations that the show racked up after its 1981 debut testifies to the power of the music, composed by Henry Krieger, and the high-bore entertainment of Tom Eyen's book. Tickets for today and Sunday's 8 p.m. shows cost $10 to $75. For more information, see kcstarlight.com.— Chris Packham
