To date, there are 562 American Indian tribes in the United States. That's not just a big number; it's
enormous — more than twice the number of the world's countries. And though it's a stretch to expect all 562 to appear at the
KC Indian Fest, several tribes from across the nation will be represented, including Navajo, Omaha and Cherokee. This two-day festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Line Creek Community Center (5940 Northwest Waukomis Drive, 816-513-0764) is a chance to eye authentic American Indian jewelry, pottery and leatherwork while sampling Indian tacos, fry bread and nachos. Native drumming, dance and storytelling come courtesy of Haskell University students and the nationally known performance artist Dennis Rogers, also a Haskell graduate. Classes and displays take place all day, including an exploration of Indian genealogy, the legacy of mound building, and a discussion led by archeologist Bert Wetherill regarding tribes that used to live where we do now.
