Restaurant Details

This tiny, charmless and smoky diner (Liberty still allows smoking in restaurants) has the distinction, such as it is, of being the oldest restaurant in this northern hamlet. The Trail’s Inn serves large, inexpensive breakfasts such as the Pioneer — an 8-ounce pork chop, two eggs, hash browns or grits, and toast and jelly. Another specialty here is elk, although the elk burger isn’t nearly as memorable as the juicy chicken-fried steak, the first-rate fried chicken livers and chicken dinners (which are cooked to order and take about 25 minutes), battered catfish, grilled ham steaks, and liver and onions. Dinners include a soup or salad, potato and roll, and most of the meals are under 10 bucks. Fresh fruit pies, cobblers and cream pies are made here and are worth saving a little room for, if you can pass up the fried okra as a side dish. — Charles Ferruzza
