More restaurant than bar, V’s is still worth going to for a cocktail or nightcap. As at any good Italian restaurant, the service is friendly and accommodating. What sets V’s apart is that sitting at the smoky bar and small lounge make you feel like you’ve gone back in time – to the mid-´80s. Everything is beige and plastic, and the mirrors on the wall look as though they’ve been imported straight from Studio 54. There is also an outdoor garden patio, with Roman statues, plants and seating.

Restaurant Details

Vita Totta has been the beloved “V” overseeing her namesake east side restaurant since the early 1960s. Unlike newer, trendier trattorias, V’s has never stopped serving toasted ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs, prime rib and Southern fried chicken. Foodies might find the menu unsophisticated, but devotees of this grapevine-covered restaurant wouldn’t have it any other way. Standout dishes include a slow-cooked osso bucco, great steaks, five different versions of fettuccine Alfredo and, yes, traditional spaghetti and meatballs. The dinners here include salad; bread; a choice of potato, pasta, fries or vegetable; and a slice of frosted rum cake. Although the restaurant is now run by her daughter and son-in-law, Vita Totta is usually in the dining room, encouraging her patrons to mangia. — Charles Ferruzza
