2005 Grammy Nominations (Capitol)

Grammy's annual self-tribute CD is just like the awards show -- one or two great moments, a lot of overwrought dreck and a handful of bad jokes. Also like the show, the tame and tepid rule the roost. Exceptions are Kanye West, who manages radio friendliness without sounding like a complete whore, and Ray Charles, who had to die to get the nod. Maybe we should propose some new categories. Atop the Soon to be Appearing in a Folgers Commercial division, we have Norah Jones' "Sunrise." The award for Next Year's Played-Out Football Anthem goes to the Black Eyed Peas for "Let's Get It Started." And Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved" takes the trophy for Best Use of Hallmark Cards in a Sound Recording (easy listening).
