Waids restaurants have been a fixture of Kansas Citys culinary scene since 1953. This strip-mall location does a boom breakfast business on weekends, serving inexpensive platters of steak and eggs, pigs in a blanket, malted waffles and grilled ham steaks. For diners who happily ignore warnings about cholesterol, fat and all those other dirty health-conscious words, Waids offers up even more rare retro fare right into the evening hours: salmon croquettes on a bed of creamed peas, grilled beef liver and onions, a deluxe chili dog and a hot roast beef sandwich smothered in gravy. Dinners still include soup or salad, vegetable or potato and a hot roll. Youll walk out thinking Dwight Eisenhowers still president. — Charles Ferruzza
