Watch the Skies

Perhaps no other leading lady in film history has been tormented by her director as thoroughly as Tippi Hedren was at the hands of Alfred Hitchcock. As one of the “Hitchcock blondes,” including Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint and Janet Leigh, Hedren may not have realized exactly what she was getting into as the star of Hitchcock’s 1963 thriller, The Birds. Wearing costumes designed by the legendary Edith Head? Being flatteringly photographed by Robert Burks? Making out with hunky Rod Taylor? On what dotted line does a girl sign? But Hitchcock likely left out the part about sewing live birds (this was pre-PETA) to Hedren’s clothing for a scene in which — well, that part you should see for yourself. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to City Market Park (Third Street and Main) for a free screening of The Birds at 9 p.m. See thecitymarket.org for more information.
