Wee Little Roadsters

Originally envisioned as the automotive equivalent of the Swatch watches popularized in the 1980s (and developed by Nicolas Hayek, CEO of Swatch maker SMH), Smart cars, manufactured by Daimler AG, are now stacked up like cordwood on the curbs of Paris. You also see a few imports around Kansas City, a town known by people who have never been to Paris as "the Paris of the Plains." With the car's small, parking-friendly footprint, high gas mileage and distinctive profile, it's perfect for downtown dwellers. This week's Smart Car Nationals brings Smart owners here from around the country for events such as today's driving tours (from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) of area attractions, including Liberty Memorial, the Jazz Museum and the Plaza. At Aristocrat Motors (9400 West 65th Street in Merriam, 913-677-3300), vendors sell and install accessories, and Smart mechanics offer one-hour tech talks (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Saturday, Aristocrat hosts a barbecue, from noon to 4 p.m., which includes performances by local bands. Events continue through Sunday, culminating in a brunch at the Westin Crown Center (1 Pershing Road, 816-474-4400). Registration runs $50-$60 for drivers, $20-$30 for guests.
