Why You Should Root for the 'Roos

Few in KC show their thanks for UMKC men's basketball. Since a move to Division I in 1986, UMKC basketball has remained the ugly step-.sibling of Kansas City winter sports: often quite pleasant but ultimately ignored for more attractive, high-profile alternatives. That's a shame, because the plucky Kangaroo program provides affordable, interesting action that can be seen live, and not just from the couch. At 7:05 p.m., the Kangaroos play the North Dakota State Bison at Swinney Recreation Center (5030 Holmes) in a Summit Conference League matchup. ESPN announcers may not hype this game incessantly, but the players do care deeply. Tickets run $5 to $15. Call 816-235-2752.— Chris Rasmussen
