Wonder Girl

To help support her family, Aviva toils as a hotel cook and suppresses her lifelong literary aspirations. But when her sister, Anita, introduces her to the washed-up novelist Oded, he recognizes Aviva's talent, mentoring her and inspiring her to pursue her dream. The cost of that dream coming true is the axis on which Aviva, My Love pivots. The winner of six awards from the Israeli Film Academy, the film screens at 7 p.m. in the social hall of the Jewish Community Center (5801 West 115th Street, Overland Park, 913-327-800). Presented by the Israeli Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City, the Israeli Movie Club continues on first Thursdays through March, with a slate including 1977's Operation Thunderbolt, 2007's Like a Fish Out of Water and 1988's The Summer of Aviya. Admission is free. For more information, see jewishkansascity.org.— Brent Shepherd
