The Zoo Bar has no cages or feeding troughs, but that doesn’t stop children from calling and asking about attractions and admission fees, according to bartenders. Just north of the Sprint Center, it's been open since 1982 and attracts a wide variety of customers depending on the time of day: older, white-collar gentlemen on extended breaks from City Hall; young partiers who ran out of money at swankier bars; and downtown neighborhood types who do what they can to keep their hangout a secret. The original walls still stand unpainted, full of handwritten graffiti and collages with headings like, “Labor Day: 1983.” Fortunately, the bar has recently expanded, adding two pool tables and more space to balance out the raucous atmosphere, which on some of its crazier nights can, indeed, be zoo-like. Keep in mind: It doesn’t have a credit card machine or beer on tap.
