On the exterior, Irene’s looks like any of the other little dives scattered around KCK’s Strawberry Hill, but it’s probably the only one owned by a bona fide Wiccan. Joanie Bocelewatz, a good witch, decorates the cozy place with her own personal charms: cackling witches on brooms zoom over an old wooden bar, and the walls are given the Mardi Gras treatment: striped in purple, gold and green in tribute to her beloved New Orleans. Bocelewatz’s zaftig tabby, Matt, is Irene’s omniscient mascot, nuzzling against legs as he makes his way across the linoleum. The patrons -- whether they’re the young locals downing Bud and shooting pool in the corner or the wizened but good-natured townies sipping bourbon at the bar -- don’t seem to mind. Irene’s houses a killer jukebox (one with room for both Dr. Hook and Abba) and an impressive row of old-school video games (including a sit-down Ms. Pac-Man) The weekly drink specials are wicked cheap to boot.
