Jerry's Woodswether Cafe

1414 West 9th Street
Kansas City, MO 64101
816-472-6333
Originally located off the winding Woodswether Road viaduct in the West Bottoms, this breakfast-and-lunch-only café is now in a much bigger building a few blocks away on Ninth Street. The exterior, however, is still decorated with wild, air-brushed murals. The menu is the same, too: robust breakfasts (the pancakes are the size of platters, and the omelets could easily feed two), hearty homemade soups and shockingly huge cheeseburgers. Signature sandwiches are the old-fashioned hot beef (served on mashed potatoes and smothered in gravy) and a grilled Reuben as good as any Miami deli’s. For really hefty eaters, there’s the hot-pepper cheeseburger, slathered with grilled onions and tucked between two thick slices of Texas toast. Order a side of onion rings, and you might not need to eat again for 24 hours. - Charles Ferruzza
