Jess & Jim's Steakhouse

517 E. 135th St.
Kansas City, MO 64145
816-941-9499
Website
For decades, this unassuming suburban steak joint — one of the oldest in the metro, dating back to 1938 — has had a gilded reputation, thanks to a 1972 Playboy article by Calvin Trillin that proclaimed it “the finest steakhouse in the world.” It isn’t, not by a long shot, but it does have unwavering fans who prefer a laid-back, uncomplicated beef barn to the snootier, more expensive porterhouse palaces on the Plaza. There are few culinary frills here, unless you count generous cuts of beef and hefty twice-baked potatoes loaded with bacon and cheese. Dinners still include pickled beets, Texas toast and salads, so even if it’s not the finest steak in town, it’s one of the most filling. - Charles Ferruzza
