Poco’s on the Boulevard

3063 Southwest Boulevard
Kansas City, MO 64108
816-931-2526
After making a name for herself cooking at all the incarnations of one midtown bistro, chef Lorenza “Poco” Gutierrez has opened her own place in an old Waids restaurant. Gutierrez shrewdly kept several popular Waids dishes on the breakfast menu (waffles, omelettes, biscuits and gravy, fluffy pancakes) but added a variety of Mexican breakfast items; the lunch menu also combines traditional American diner fare and Mexican favorites. Where Gutierrez really shines, though, is at dinner, offered only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. These meals start with chips and a jade-green cilantro-and-avocado salsa, followed by soup or salad and one of nine entrees such as chicken mole; chile rellenos; a juicy Kansas City strip smothered in cactus, jalepeno, tomatoes and onion; Yucatan tacos made with delicious orange-cilantro pork; and a grilled rack of lamb. - Charles Ferruzza
