Ponak's

2856 Southwest Blvd.
Kansas City, MO 64108
816-753-0775
Dining at the only Mexican restaurant on Southwest Boulevard with a Balkan name (owner John Ponak’s Croatian grandmother started the place) is like eating in a 1950s knotty-pine rec room. The traditional Mexican dishes are hearty and inexpensive, with especially fine pork and shredded beef burritos and a piquant chicken mole. The service is friendly and speedy. If there’s a wait, it’s worth it. - Charles Ferruzza

The Inside Word on Ponak's

One of the best place to hit up on the boulevard!!!

There is one reason to head to Ponak's, and that is for the very strong margaritas. Don't get me wrong, the food is decent (try the Sonoran tacos or the happy hour special), but is anything but authentic. A half a pitcher of margaritas will likely get two people feeling very nice, but I'd opt for a full pitcher if you want to make a night of it.

I won't order a margarita anywhere else! I had kind of written off the food for awhile, however, my recent experience has me reconsidering. My husband had Carne con Chili (not chili con carne?) "A bowl of chunks of choice pork on a bed of frijoles. Your choice of flour or corn tortillas." As a vegetarian, I always appreciate a good chili relleno. Theirs was not stellar but above average for sure. But back to the margaritas. If you have a DD and want to get straight to the point instead of paying $5 a pop for some watered down martini elsewhere, I suggest getting a half pitcher at Ponak's with a tall straw. For $14.50, I guarantee a more than healthy buzz :-) (Results may vary but I'm not a small girl or a beginner and I usually need to be carried out)
