The idea of a tropics-inspired beach shack in the middle of a suburban blacktop parking lot may sound ridiculous, but the Sunset Grill is so eccentric, you can’t help but like it. Hands-on owners Rod Lampe and Dan Tierney often make sure there’s live music playing in the lounge and that the bartenders can whip up all kinds of exotic, fruity cocktails. The menu leans heavily in the direction of the South Seas, though not all of the dishes are culinary pearls. The fare that sounds like vacation food is best: burgers, shrimp tacos, salads, a respectable Key lime pie. It’s a family-friendly, nonsmoking concept aimed firmly at baby-boomer diners who remember the venue’s name comes from a Don Henley song. - Charles Ferruzza
