Ten

701 Massachusetts
Lawrence, KS 66044
785-749-5011
Website
When Lawrence’s venerable Eldridge Hotel – a splendid lodging house with a unique history that parallels the fortunes of this college town – had its most recent renovation, the ground-floor dining room was transformed into a pretty, slightly formal restaurant called Ten (named for the number on the basketball jersey worn by 1968 All-American KU football star Bobby Douglass). It’s now the fanciest place to eat in the city. The menu – which is also used in the more casual tile-floored saloon called the Jayhawker across the hall – has an interesting array of luncheon and dinner items ranging from sandwiches, soups and salads to seafood crusted with various ingredients, along with excellent (and modestly-priced) steaks, a couple of tasty vegetarian dishes and big fattening desserts. It’s one of the most appealing upscale dinner spots on the busy Massachusetts corridor, with a fine wine list. - Charles Ferruzza
