The Bamboo Hut

10111 E. 40 Hwy.
Independence, MO 64055
816-353-9472
This old roadhouse has been serving fried chicken — deep-fried, if you’re fussy about that sort of thing — and stiff cocktails since 1932. Back then, it had a “South Seas” theme, which explains the joint’s offbeat name, but the current interior design is less exotic — think basement rec room, 1966. The paneled walls, vinyl-sheathed tables and big-screen TV create a cozy ambience that complements the home-style menu: fried chicken livers, fried shrimp, decent (and cheap) steak dinners and thick sandwiches. No desserts, unless you’d like a rum and Coke or a whiskey stinger to cap off your meal - Charles Ferruzza
