This isn’t the only sushi restaurant in Lawrence, but it’s one of the oldest and most popular. It’s on bustling Massachusetts Street and has plenty to accommodate diners who simply can’t be seduced by supple, sexy sushi: deliciously crunchy tempura choices, pretty bento boxes, a few Korean favorites (including bulgogi) and teriyaki. In addition to a wide selection of interesting rolls, nigiri and sashimi, Wa’s sushi menu - in keeping with college spirits - features a Jayhawk Roll, a Lawrence Roll, a KU Roll, a Mass Roll, and a White Castle Roll made with super white tuna instead of onion-slathered beef. The service is iconoclastic to say the least, but if you’re a regular, you can store your personal chopsticks in an ornate cabinet. - Charles Ferruzza
