Gen-X and -Y director Kevin Smith told the Brit version of Rotten Tomatoes that his next flick – a horror movie titled Red State – will feature a villain inspired by the pastor of Topeka’s gay hatin’ Westboro Baptist Church.
"That dude has always fascinated me and he's really informed the horror movie that I'm working on," Smith told Rotten Tomatoes.
"The movie's called Red State and it's very much about that subject matter, that point of view and that position taken to the absolute extreme," Smith told the site. "It's certainly not Phelps himself but it's very much inspired by a Phelps figure. And to me, too, the notion of using a Phelps-like character as a villain, as horrifying and scary as that guy can be, there's even something more insidious than him that lurks out there in as much as a public or a government that allows it and that's the other thing that I'm trying to examine in a big, big way."
Smith is looking for “a true red state” to film in later this year. The Clerks and Chasing Amy director says the film is set in a snow-covered Minnesota.
We can already see Fred and the fam picketing local theaters with “Fag director” signs.

I know what you guys mean when you speak of gays putting their sexuality in your face. I woke up this morning to find two guys rolling around on my floor. I threw them out and put the wrestling on the tv...
Tolerance. It's an interesting word. Look it up. No one, not a person, is asking you to like homosexuality. They're just asking you to mind your own business and stop worrying about what people are doing in the privacy of their own lives and homes.
The only thing I'm disappointed with Red State for is it's giving this moron the publicity he craves.
As a citizen of Topeka, I want to say that I am completely ashamed to say that i am a citizen of topeka. The whole Phelps clan makes our entire city look like the brown eye of the country. I could care less about peoples choices and I think that this is a great plot for a movie and I will hope that this might get people to see exactly how crazy this guy is. Atleast they are passing a law here that he cannot picket directly outside of funerals. KEVIN:Please speak the truth and make a difference. If anyone can its you. THANKS!
Why must people worry about what others do? I bet all of you have sinned. It must be nice to act a fool during the week and go to church on Sunday acting holy.
I like a lot of Kevin's stuff, but this idea sounds utterly brillant! I am from GErmany and had never heard about that Phelps-guy before, but he is one of the scariest people I have seen in my life. Equally intimidatiing: His grandchildren, check them on youtube. It's hard to believe anyone could be so fanatic. Should make for the best villain since Lecter.
Film in Georgia! We have LOTS of wackjobs round here.
i think it is an excellent idea to create a movie based on this real life villain. never before have i seen such hatred come from a man that claims to have so much love. let me say now: the GLBT's that i know personally have more love and understanding in one "sodomizing" finger than all of the westboro baptists combined.
Mike, do you really believe that stuff? You know if any of that was true he'd be serving time now. The guy who wrote that was a disgruntled employee fired by the Topeka Capital Journal. Why do you print that stuff? You want to legitimize your sins, so you like to fantasize about imaginary crimes that are committed by people who condemn your sins? I'm a troll in the sense that I think you're probably too hardened to hear what I say, but I must say it nonetheless.
Hey Smurf Breath -
You're so quick to defend Mr. Phelps... tell me (if you're not a troll) do you support child abuse, incest, extortion, and all-around bigotry? If you do, then you are just as good of a 'christian' as Mr. Phelps. If you're a true, believing Christian, then you might see Phelps for the shill that he is.
Kevin - keep up the GREAT work!
Passion of the Christ is ten times as offensive as Dogma... not to mention it was made by an anti-semetic drunk
Kevin, I love your work. Ever since watching Clerks a year ago(yes, I'm a complete noob), I've been a big fan. I even have a Clerks 2 theatrical poster on my wall :)
I got to say, people should be more open-minded towards "Red State". Kevin's not attacking religion or spirituality. All he is doing is taking on a very negative idea that is homophobia. Homophobia exists in our society and it should not. Hating someone because they are different is not the way to go.
Homosexuals are people too and some people just have to learn that. People should be able to love who they want to love.
And since people are using religion as an attack against Kevin Smith, wasn't Jesus about acceptance and love? I thought Christ ate and drank with the "sinners". I was always told as a child to love my neighbour and yet I see people promoting homophobia while going under the same "value system". The image of Buddy Christ is essentially how Smith sees Christ: as a buddy. So, don't attack Smith for something like that.
Homophobia is horrific. Period.
Would you like it if someone started hating you for having a specific characteristic?
I think not.
You got my love and support, Kevin. May God be with you, bro.
Well, kudos to Kevin Smith for doing a great job thus far. while i am against anyone who oppresses others with beliefs i do find that homosexuality is immoral. and that these who partake in such acts do not need more rights to protect them or keep sticking the fact of their sexuality in our face to remind us. but the fact that a leader of a Christian church to post hate signs or protest in a disrespectful manner is a great horror to any human. where is the love , that is the christian duty .
Phelps is evil masquerading as the richeous to sway the weak minded away from God's true word.
Mr. Smith. Remember, there are many Christians who thought Dogma was very thought provoking.
Judge not. God is the final arbiter of what is right. Don't cast stones at this filmmaker.
""Red State" isn't set in Minnesota; the comedy we're doing after the horror flick is set in Minnesota."
Minnesota... like... maybe... Eden Prarie, MN? *caughs*diehardinamall*caughs* Lookin' foreward to both flicks!!!
Geoff
Film in Shreveport, LA! There's a lot of filming going own here. Costnar has done a couple films here and Harold & Kumar 2 was just filmed here.
*yawn* Another attempt to demonize Fred Phelps, by someone whose worldview automatically rules out any criteria for demonizing anything. Even if some of his theology is off, Fred is saner than the secular humanist (now that is an oxymoronic term).
What do you find so horrifying, Kev? Are you afraid that maybe Fred is basically right after all, and someday you will face the consequences of suppressing that knowledge?
Yes film in Kansas! I'll get you coffee and dougnuts all day for free, my Grandpa was a supreme-court judge in Topeka, that bastard showed up to his funeral to protest because he passed certain gay rights. I'd do anything to help him get the slander he deserves. I have some interesting pics of that jack-ass too.
i love you Kevin Smith..so damned much.
film in kansas!
"I hate "Buddy Jesus" the same way I hate child molesters, frat boys, and Kevin Smith: with total, Semper Fi commitment."
*yawn*
Anyway, random-hostility-from-some-clown-with-way-too-much-free-time-to-comment-on-a-subject-that's-got-zero-to-do-with-him aside, just wanted to correct something from the article above: "Red State" isn't set in Minnesota; the comedy we're doing after the horror flick is set in Minnesota.
And Chris? Even though you hate me... I still love you. So damned much.
Thank you for not using a photo of "Buddy Jesus." I hate "Buddy Jesus" the same way I hate child molesters, frat boys, and Kevin Smith: with total, Semper Fi commitment.
