Sauerkraut or Spaghetti?

If I knew which ethnic group I was descended from, events based on that heritage might fill me with cultural pride and a sense of belonging. Sadly, I’m unsure which brand of white bread I am. Maybe by hitting up ethnically themed events, I’ll eventually stumble onto something that feels familiar, deep down in my DNA.

Why not start with film festivals? Saturday, April 21, the Italian Film Festival of Kansas City kicks off at the Screenland Granada. It’s a two-day, four-film celebration of contemporary and classic Italian movies. Saturday’s double feature starts at 7 p.m.; Sunday’s movies begin at 1 p.m. All screenings are free. And in case you don’t understand the mother tongue, the films have English subtitles.

So do the flicks on view starting April 26 at Mission Theatre at 5909 Johnson Drive in Mission. The free German film series presented there by the Hannover Committee of the Sister City Association of Kansas City also includes complimentary German snacks. The prospect of a good wiener wurstchen already has me tempted to start claiming ancestors in Deutschland. For a complete festival schedule, check out the calendar here.
