The Weekend Ahead: Anti-Gravity, Comic Books and Puppets

Posted by Chris Packham on Fri, May 4, 2007 at 3:09 PM

Over the past few years, a guy named Trikz has shaken the carpetbagging world of fancy basketball trickery to its foundations. This is from a Trikz-related press release:

“Despite never playing for an NBA® team, Trikz enjoys superstar status among NBA® players and millions of fans around the globe who have witnessed what he can do with a basketball - moves which often defy gravity.

And I’m, like, sure, buddy. I believe you can dribble two, perhaps three basketballs simultaneously around your legs while spinning a fourth on your head, but c’mon -- moves which defy gravity? Often? I’m not a physicist, but I did once drop a Resusci-Annie doll off the roof

of a YMCA. And I say that anti-gravity technology is a bunch of Star Trek bullshit. And just in case you think I’m talking about the good kind of Star Trek in which George Takei goes insane, rips off his shirt and runs around the Enterprise with a sword, rest assured that I’m talking about the stinkiest, Whoopi Goldbergiest kind of Star Trek.

Be that as it may, Steve and Barry’s (J.C. Nichols Parkway and Ward Parkway) has booked Trikz at 6 tonight. There, he will demonstrate his amazing facility with basketballs. Here’s a totally free idea for Mr. Trikz: Challenge multiple people to simultaneous rounds of horse, like those chess-playing dudes at the carnival who checkmate 20 people at a time.

At this weekend’s Planet Comicon, bear in mind that some of the more famous comic book artists in attendance actually charge a fee for autographs, so be sure to take along a roll of dollar bills. Tuck the bills gently into the artist’s G-string, with no palm-to-skin contact, or you’ll get tossed by the bouncers. And if you send in a photograph of Jim Lee giving you a lap dance, Carl Kasell will record the muthafuckin' outgoing message on your answering machine. You’ll find Planet Comicon at the Overland Park International Trade Center (6800 West 115th Street). Two-day passes cost $15.

Saturday is Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates the victory of Dusty Bottoms, Lucky Day and Ned Nederlander over the forces of the tyrannical El Guapo. The Guadalupe Center (1015 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez) is hosting what sounds like an awesome Cinco de Mayo festival, featuring children’s rides, musical performances, Mexican food and and folklore presentations by El Grupo Folklorico Atotonilco.

Also: there’s a Polski Day parade beginning at 18th Street and Central at noon, so if you plan your day right, you can celebrate the cultural heritage of people from different hemispheres on the same day.

Finally, Paul Mesner Puppets teams up with the Civic Opera for a uniquely puppety interpretation of The Mikado, with shows tonight, Saturday and Sunday. This one is definitely for anyone who loves both Gilbert and Sullivan and puppets. To draw an analogy, it would be as if you were a fan of gay robots and sugary breakfast cereal and then someone found a way to combine the two.

Have a great weekend, and remember: If you have to huff paint thinner from an old sports sock, keep one hand on the wheel at the 12 o’clock position. -- Chris Packham
