Fired Up! Missouri offered up this nearly line-by-line analysis recently of a story in The Kansas City Star. The blog claims that the Star watered down the McClatchy Company's original newspaper piece because the paper's "editorial staff feels the need to protect 'the Republican-controlled Missouri General Assembly' from exposure to facts reported on and published by its parent company."
This morning, the Pitch sent a request for a response to the Star's Steve Kraske, who contributed to the article, as well as its original author, a correspondent for McClatchy. Kraske declined to comment, but if McClatchy responds, you'll see it posted here. -- Eric Barton

The Star's deputy national editor, Keith Chrostowski, sent me this response:
Eric: here's a comment I put on KC Buzz Blog May 9.
The Star has followed the U.S. attorneys story for months and published several articles in the paper and on Prime Buzz. Also Steve Kraske has written columns about it.
We have tried to answer numerous questions surrounding the case, but have to verify information before we publish.
We published the Bond story on Prime Buzz yesterday afternoon, well before The Post's story. [ Eric: this graph was in response to a KC Buzz Blog comment, not Fired UP.]
As for the McClatchy story, the thrust of the story that ran in the paper was the same as the McClatchy version. We did some independent reporting and editing, which took some time, and that's why the story was held a day.
There was never any thought about NOT publishing it.
Also: regarding Lathrop and Gage, another comment I posted May 9.
Lathrop and Gage are our libel and open records lawyers only. The work they've done for The Star is no secret -- it's been mentioned numerous times in the paper.
The law firm had nothing to do with the editing of the stories mentioned here, just as it has nothing to do with the editing of any stories in the paper.
